We opened the class talking about PISA (Program for International Student Assessment) scores in Canada - how students are doing well compared to the OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development) member countries' average, but there is some concern about significant shifts in math and literacy skills. --> Students thought about the things that could be impacting their learning, and then we talked about the ways in which they are better set up than many to overcome those challenges.
We did our utmost to remember everyone's name - It was a challenge, and lots of us needed some help, but perfection is not the goal. We want to encourage one another, and stretch ourselves, while trying to learn to recognize our classmates and build community.
We listened to "Imagine" by John Lennon, and considered the lyrics - we thought about what is really being asked for by the speaker, and why.
Homework:
- Students should have a novel ready for tomorrow's class (Wednesday)
- Students should have a brainstorm/list titled "Ideal Community" - with at least ten ideas on it about what belongs in their ideal community. These can be institutions, values, systems --> rather than go the way of the "Imagine" lyrics, state what IS in the ideal community.
We will continue work with this over the next several classes - Students will receive more detailed project instructions tomorrow. In the meantime, they should find colours/fineliners and bring them to class!
